In this blog post I want to share with you some of my best practices to setting goals for success. As we get closer to the New Year, many of you are already setting goals that are going to start on January 1st.

Here’s the problem with that, if you’re going to wait to start later you have already missed out and are behind in the race..

Think about it this way –  if you are a football player would you wait until the day of the first game of the season to start practicing or would you take the time to start getting in shape and practicing for your best game ahead of time?

No, you would have been practicing, studying the playbook and getting in shape way ahead of time.

Setting Goals

Setting Goals that will Lead To Disappointment

One of the biggest problems with setting goals that will start at the beginning of the New Year is that most of those goals are unrealistic and in most cases will never be met.

You might ask why?

What happens is that we get to the 1st of the year and we decide that we want to accomplish a huge lofty goal, something thats going to transform us to a different person!!! Problem is that up until that point, we have not done anything to prepare ourselves to start working towards that goal. There were no changes in our daily habits or routines that would help move us closer to being ready to take on such a big challenge, maybe one of the biggest of our lifetime!

January 1st comes along, we are excited and full of motivation… Then a few days later, realizing that the goal we set was a really big goal and we see that what we are doing is not working out and we become discouraged. Eventually we self sabotage ourselves with negative thoughts believing that this is not the work and we find excuses and eventually quit.

 Setting Goals

How Setting Goals the right way & Eat that Elephant too!

The first step in goal setting is to establish what the end result is- What do you want to accomplish?

Make sure that your Goal is something that you have to stretch for, but at the same time is obtainable and not totally unrealistic as long as you take the appropriate actions!

Bad Example; You want to make money online – so you set your goal to make $10,000 a month.

Problem – You have not made any money online yet! It is not very likely overnight you are going to accomplish this goal.  It’s like trying to eat an entire elephant in one big bite!.

The best way to approach this would be determined how much you want to make each day, week then each month and then break down the action steps you need to take to make that money to meet that income. This is a crucial part to setting goals..

Knowing this is can help you set your overall goal to work towards because you know what actions you need to take and how long it will take you to get there.

Second step to successfully Setting Goals- Don’t wait to start!

Why do you want to wait start now and start working towards that goal again why wait for game day when you can start preparing now.

Just remember each small step you take is like taking a little bite out of the elephant and eventually you’re able to eat the entire elephant.
